Rowan Ruth was born in June. Her journey began with a two week stay in the NICU. We soon learned that our angel had a rare liver disorder called Biliary Atresia. (check out www.baaware.org) Basically, bile cannot escape and it then begins to poison the liver. The Kasai procedure, a complicated surgery attempting to make a new way for bile to escape the liver, was performed when she was just three months old. However, it was not successful. In mid October Rowan became sick with an infection (Cholangitis) and her struggles soon began. After many weeks at Dell Children's Hospital, it became clear that she was not improving. We then transferred to Texas Children's Hospital in Houston. We watched her become more yellow every day. Her bilirubin total was a 27 at it's highest. I cannot count the number of times she has had IV's started, blood drawn, abdominal ultrasounds, xrays, been forced to go without food for procedures, and more. Despite it all, she constantly has had a smile on her face. Rowan was placed on the liver transplant list November 19th with a PELD score of 32. Her status continued to quickly decline. On November 29th Rowan received her gift of life- a liver transplant. This is her new story...
